- Angina: Sedation can reduce cardiac workload and increase vasodilation, making sedation for stable angina patients safer than without sedation.
- Cirrhosis: Cirrhosis limits the liver’s ability to metabolize sedation drugs.
- Advanced age: Patients over 65 require special attention due to age-related health issues such as diabetes, heart disease and high cholesterol. They may have decreased plasma proeins and therefore only require half the normal dose.
- HIV/Hepatitis: Patients don’t have to disclose HIV status; medication lists may reveal hepatic infections.
- Diabetes: Baseline blood glucose readings and recent hemoglobin A1C values should be obtained at the sedation workup visit.
- Respiratory diseases: Controlled asthmatics can receive sedation, but not COPD patients.

Recognizing Abnormal Heart Rhythms
While it takes years for cardiologists to learn all the different heart rhythms, team members need to recognize what a normal heart rhythm looks like to identify abnormal ones.
Monitor for Signs of Low Blood Sugar
Patients with hypoglycemia or diabetes require extra attention during procedures, even without sedation. Monitor for signs of low blood sugar and conduct a thorough health history.
